My Guide To Thrift Store Shopping

If you know me, you may know that I love to get stuff from my local thrift store. It's pretty cheap, and you can find some great stuff in there. Because I've spent so much time in that place and gotten so many things there, I thought that I'd share a little guide with you. Of course you don't have to follow it, it's just what works for me!
1. Be open minded
You don't just have to look for clothes at a thrift store (unless it's specifically for clothes). I often like to get teacups there and, just recently, I started looking for old musical soundtracks on vinyls so that I can hang the covers on my walls. Yes, that's where I get all the teacups you've seen on this blog from!

2. Try it on (if you can)
It's great to see if it actually fits you or not. It may have some weird deformation that you didn't notice when it was hanging up, and that's why the previous owner gave it away.

3. Know what you're capable of
Often  when I try on a piece of clothing, it's a little too big on me. It helps to look at the seams and see if it's possible for me to take it in. I have a huge pile of clothes to fix that I'm finally getting around to now that it's summer. Sometimes, though, I can't fix it, and I take on projects that are too big for me. One idea I have is to turn a dress that's too big into a skirt, as the top can be too complex.
4. Know what you like
It's great to keep in mind what you "style" is. I'm not saying to not try new things, but if there are certain colours or styles you like, it will make it easier to pinpoint what to look for.

5. Visualize the possibilities
For example, if it's a piece of clothing, I like to envision how I'd wear it and where I'd wear it. If you can't see yourself wearing it or feeling comfortable with it or in it, you probably shouldn't get it.

Do you like to go to thrift stores?

  1. These are such good tips, Amy! #3 is especially good to keep in mind--though sometimes it is kind of motivational to buy something with your own money, and knowing you spent money on it will make you wanna complete that project so it doesn't go to waste. Oh and #1, being open-minded, is another good point! I like to go to thrift stores for all kinds of things, but sometimes it gets confusing when I'm looking for clothes *and* fabric, so I like to go with one goal in mind per trip so I don't get too overwhelmed.

  5. Oh Amy these are great!!
I never used to be much of a shopper at all, but some members of my family really are so I've learned that it's easier to engage myself by looking for things instead of just saying are you ready to go yet (lol). Now I find thrift store shopping quite fun, there's always something new to find, and you never quite know what you're going to get!! I always say TRY IT ON even though trying on clothes can sometimes be annoying. Things are so different in person than on the rack, totally agree with you there. Great list!!

  8. I'm a hell of a thrifter too. I love finding vintage things or even recent items/styles for a much cheaper prices compared to purchasing brands with quite high price tags. Not only it's fun for the budget, it somehow feels good after that you were able to score good deals or steals; as if like you're the best treasure hunter in the world. Hehe.

  17. Love, love, love this post! I've actually never considered thrift shopping until this past year. I've done it about three times, but I'm definitely going to refer to this post the next time I go. I'm planning on picking up some cute tees and sweaters I can DIY for the upcoming school year. Lovely post, Amy! So glad I came across your blog! xx
