Recent Reads Part 5

I always enjoy typing up these little round-ups, and I hope that you enjoy reading them, too! This is the fifth installment in my Recent Reads series, and I don't have too many books to share today. I've read a lot more than this since my last Recent Reads post, but I wanted to share with you only the ones that I actually enjoyed and would recommend to you.
Average Goodreads Rating: 4.4/5 stars
My Rating: 4.5/5 stars

This story revolves around Count Alexander Rostov, and his life from 1922 on after he is placed under house arrest in the Metropol hotel, across the street from the Kremlin. His world now revolves around what happens in the hotel, and the story spans many years of his life in the Metropol.
Even though I really liked this book, I didn't find it super engaging. But maybe that was the whole point, to get a look into a world where time seems to pass so fast. I loved the way it was written, though.

My Rating: ⅘ stars

This is a retelling of the Illiad, told by Patroclus. The story starts when the young prince is exiled to the house of King Peleus and his son Achilles. Achilles is the perfect prince, and everything that Patroclus is not. However, Achilles decides to befriend him, and they grow closer and closer as the years go on. But when Helen of Sparta is kidnapped, Achilles must go to war in Troy. Little do they know, this war will change everything that Achilles and Patroclus thought they knew.
I think that this is a beautifully written book. I quite enjoyed the first parts, but I found that it started to drag around the last ¼. However, I did really enjoy this book, especially because it's rather different than what I usually read. I also got so caught up in it that I finished it quite quickly!

Average Goodreads Rating: 4.1/5 stars
My Rating: ⅘ stars

Anna is happy with her life in Atlanta, with her best friend, great job, and a crush that she suspects soon might be more. But her world is flipped upside-down when her father decides to send her to a boarding school in Paris. She's terrified of living alone in a new country, without any friends or family. This is made easier, though, when she meets √Čtienne St. Clair. The only problem is his girlfriend… But magical things can happen in the city of love!
I honestly didn't expect to like this book as much as I did. It was a cute, light, fluffy book, and I couldn't take it too seriously, but it was the perfect book to relax with, and I quite enjoyed reading it.

Average Goodreads Rating: 4/5 stars
My Rating: 3.5/5 stars

Otis and Meg were the best of friends, until Meg and her family suddenly moved after a horrible accident left Otis's younger brother dead. Ever since the move, Otis hasn't heard a word from Meg, until he gets the sudden news that she'll be coming back for the summer. Now he must face how much both he and Meg have changed in three years time. Otis's life has also been taken over by Dara- half best friend, half coach, who wants to make Otis into the Olympic swimmer that she can never be. But when Meg comes back, Otis must face some difficult truths.
I enjoyed this book, but I didn't love it. I'm not sure why, but something about it didn't work for me. It was still an interesting read, though, and I'd still recommend it.

Have you read any of these? What are some of your favourite recent reads?

  1. I've been wondering whether or not to read A Gentleman in Moscow! Thank you for the review <3 TSOA YESSS. It permanently shattered my heart, dear lord. Some of my most favorite recent reads are Lace Bone Beast by N.L. Shompole, Mark of the Plague by Kevin Sands, and Les Miserables by Victor Hugo.
